DREW CAREY Comedian, Actor, Television Host And Producer
Actor, comedian. Born Drew Alison Carey on May 23, 1958, in Cleveland, Ohio. Carey’s father died when he was eight, and the withdrawn young boy spent much of his spare time reading cartoons and playing in the school band. After graduating, Drew Carey enrolled in Kent State, but suffered from bouts of depression that ultimately led to his dropping out. When he eventually enlisted in the United States Marines in 1980, it seemed to be just the structure Carey needed to turn his life around.
At the urging of a friend, Drew Carey became interested in comedy and began doing stand-up, eventually appearing on The Tonight Show. In 1995, ABC gave Carey his own self-titled sitcom in which he played the assistant director of personnel at a department store in Cleveland, Ohio. Filled with everyman humor and a likable cast, The Drew Carey Show was extremely popular and lasted until 2004. During this time, Drew Carey also hosted the American version of the wildly popular British improv show, Whose Line Is It Anyway?.
