Grant Turner:

GRANT TURNER

A funny thing happened to handsome, articulate and hilarious Grant Turner on the way to stardom. His personality, lifestyle, voice, IQ, ambitions, wardrobe, accent and hairstyle split down the middle, giving birth to the innocent-yet-worldly, wise with a side order of backwoods simplicity, Ricky Mokel.

His (theirs) is a fascinating story of a Journalism major from the University of Georgia who became a young, successful advertising executive in Atlanta.

Grant Turner's first audition was during his lunch hour at an amateur competition in a pizza parlor in Atlanta. An interview with one of Atlanta's top entertainment weeklies quoted him as saying that he would "like to pursue comedy full time someday." Someday was that day; Turner was fired. Within six months, however, Turner was an opening act in Atlanta's brand new Punchline, winning the Great Southeastern Laff-Off, performing his unique style of facially manic, observational, down-home humor. California beckoned and Turner headed west to pursue his dream.

Since then, Grant has appeared on Star Search, has been a regular at the Improv nationwide, was named by Playgirl, one of America's "Sexiest Comics," (fully clothed) and has appeared on A&E's Improv Tonite.

A wife and two babies later, the Turner family moved back east to their first home in North Carolina. To keep the act in tune, not to mention the mortgage payments current, he took jobs in small, Smokey Mountain clubs with bad lighting, squeaky sound, poor ventilation and hostile audiences. It was a far cry from the Improv in L.A., and, when Turner didn't show up one night, Ricky Mokel stepped up to the mike and announced, "I jus' came in to use the phone!" and he's been a full-time headliner ever since. A&E's Evening at the Imrov asked Turner back, but he sent Ricky in his place, leading to a show stopping performance on Comedy on the Road.

Grant Turner still brings the house to its feet at corporate speaking engagements, performing a hilarious seminar spoof as "Tom Butters" as well as clubs and TV appearances, and will even (for a slightly additional fee) open for Ricky.
