KELLY MONTEITH
It was not that long ago when you could hire writer / producer / actor comedian Kelly Monteith to do a stand-up comedy routine at rock-n-roll show for five bucks a night! But that was in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri when he was first starting out at the age of 15. Now Kelly Monteith commands attention and respect as one of the countries's most sought after comedy writers and stand-up comedians.
Kelly Monteith's rise to the top is a text-book version of a performer's "over night sensations." After graduating from high school, Monteith spent two years in extensive acting studies at the famed Pasadena Playhouse College of Theater Arts. It was at this time Kelly Monteith began working as a stand-up comedian in clubs in around Los Angeles. After a short stint with the U.S. Naval Air Reserve, Kelly Monteith returned to LA to let his hair grow and began writing comedy. Soon Kelly Monteith was selling jokes to Phyllis Diller who encouraged him to move to Las Vegas to write comedy material for top comics such as Jackie Mason, Shecky Greene and Jackie Vernon.
With the big laughs of Kelly Monteith's material going to other comics, it wasn't long before he realized that he was missing out. An appearance on the Mike Douglas Show spawned a personal request from Jack Paar to be on the first week of his return to late night television. Shortly after that he auditioned for the Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and made the first of his over fifty Tonight Show appearances in December of 1973. Since then Kelly Monteith has become a favorite guest on every talk and variety show produced.
The National Television exposure not only made Kelly Monteith a house hold name, but turned him into an opening act in the main rooms of Las Vegas and on tour around the country. Kelly Monteith has been asked to open or co-headline with some of the World's biggest superstars including: Diana Ross, Kenny Rogers, The Oak Ridge Boys, Neil Sadaka and Sammy Davis Jr.
Kelly Monteith's popularity soon leaped "across the pond" as he was invited to England to appear on the Des O'Connor Show two years in a row. Kelly Monteith's brand of humor proved so popular in England that the BBC offered him his own television show, making him the first American comedian to land a steady series on British television. The "Kelly Monteith" show debuted to rave reviews from the normally reserved British television critics and went on to win a Silver Rose for Excellence at Montreaux International Television Festival.
The "Kelly Monteith" series ran six years on both BBC-1 and BBC-2. The series was a favorite of The Royal Family whom subsequently asked Kelly Monteith to appear in a Command Performance for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The show was such a hit that Kelly Monteith was asked back twice to perform at gala events for Princess Margaret and Princess Anne.
The longing for a good American Hoagie and the birth of his daughter persuaded Kelly Monteith to return to the States where comedy club owners welcomed him back like royalty. After spending time headlining at clubs and concert halls, Kelly Monteith decided to pursue acting roles in television and film. To date he has made appearances on a number of shows including: "Evening At The Improv," I"Improv Tonight," "The Love Boat," "Comic Strip Live," and "The New Love American Style".
Kelly Monteith went on to host "The Hit Squad", a syndicated show that was a forerunner to the popular television series, "America's Funniest Home Videos" and "Totally Hidden Video,' and was featured in Universal's hilarious feature film, "Screwball Hotel."
With future plans of writing and creating his own comedy series, film role offers and constant five bucks a night are well in the distant past!
