PAUL RODRIGUEZ Comedian & Producer
PAUL RODRIGUEZ
Paul Rodriguez, comedian, producer, and director is not only one of the most well known stand-up comedians in the country, but the only successful one thus far who is bilingual. This is one of his greatest advantages and appeals. He leaves both English and Spanish-speaking audiences laughing.
Born in Culican, Mexico, he relocated to East Los Angeles as a young boy. After graduating from Dominguez High School in Compton, he went on to obtain an AA degree from a local college. Intent on becoming an attorney, Paul enrolled in California State University, Long Beach.
During an acting class, drama teacher Murray Becker witnessed the young man's talent and took him to "Amateur Night" at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, where the owner himself immediately offered Paul a job at the door and an opportunity to do nightly stints on the stage, although usually not until two or three in the morning. His popularity has not stopped since.
In addition to his talents as a comedian, he made his debut as a director with the feature film, A Million to Juan (a contemporary adaptation of the Mark Twain story The Million Bank Pond), which starred a notable Hispanic cast including Cheech Marin, Tony Plana, Edward James Olmos, Liz Torres, Ruben Blades and many more.
He was also the executive producer of Back to School '92, a CBS special featuring Rodriguez and hosted by Sinbad, with guest appearances by Arnold Schwarzenegger, Robin Williams and other celebrities in a moving two-hour testimony on the importance of education.
Among the many non-profit causes and organizations that he has contributed to are Education First, Cities and Schools, Project Literacy and NALEO. Rodriguez is also an active participant in Comic Relief; a show designed to aid the homeless. He has appeared on the HBO program every year since its inception.
In 1995 he organized "Latin Nights" to raise funds for the National Scholarship Fund which featured such high profile guest stars as Carlos Santana, Rita Moreno and Jimmy Smits.
For four years, he hosted El Show De Paul Rodriguez, an entertainment talk show for Univision, the Spanish-language television network. The show reached an international audience, appearing in the United States and 17 other countries throughout Central and South America.
In December 1995 he was chosen to be one of the presenters at The Bravo Awards, the only Latino award special to air nationally on prime time television and organized by the National Council of La Raza, the largest Hispanic organization in the country. The Bravo Awards were established to celebrate positive portrayals of Hispanics in American film, TV and music. The following year, in 1996, he again was a presenter and this time was awarded the Honoree Bravo Award for a TV variety show at the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles.
