JOE ROGAN Actor, Comedian And Host of The Fear Factor
Humor comes naturally to Joe Rogan. On NBC's hit show NewsRadio, Rogan plays 'Joe', the resident electrician at WNYX Radio. Rogan's character manages to stand out as a wise-cracking, straight forward, IQ-challenged, funny man. With encouragement from Paul Simms, the show's creator and executive producer, Rogan renamed his character from 'Ted' to 'Joe' and developed many of the trademark characteristics that we now associate with him. A stand-up comedian Joe Rogan incorporated much of his own style of humor into the personality that we see every Wednesday night at 9:30pm.
Joe Rogan's television career was launched even before his arrival in California. A tape of Rogan's stand-up routine on MTV was circulated around Hollywood which had network and studio executives dueling for his talent and landed him a development deal at Disney. While developing a show based on his comedy, Rogan was simultaneously cast in the Fox sitcom, Hardball. Opting to put his development deal on hold, Rogan took the part of 'Frank Valenti' the fast-talking, arrogant baseball player with unlimited funds. While the series was short-lived, Joe Rogan's opportunity to segue from stand-up comedy to series regular work proved to be an invaluable experience.
Though Joe Rogan has always possessed innate comedic timing and a personality that craves a creative outlet, he didn't pursue a career in entertainment until his college days. Born in New Jersey and raised in Boston, Rogan's predominant focus growing up was martial arts. He was a four-time Massachusetts State Champion for Tae Kwon Do and in 1987 was a US Open Lightweight Champion in all weight classes. The martial arts "really kept me in focus as an adolescent because of the long training hours." It helped to "give me clarity in how I saw myself and the outside world." Today, Rogan is a ring side reporter for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, perfectly blending his love of competition and performing. Rogan fell into standup while teaching Tae Kwon Do at a local gym. Many of his friends with whom he worked out with encouraged him to try "open mike night" at a nearby comedy club. After listening to many mediocre comedians Joe Rogan finally agreed to try out his material. From that point on, he was hooked.
Joe Rogan enjoys performing in clubs. "Stand-up comedy is the best job in the world," he says. "I can speak my mind, let off steam, and get paid for it." Stand-up brought Rogan to Hollywood. Some of his credits include, Guest Host on Later and Mad TV and appearances on Late Night With Conan O'Brien and Politically Incorrect.
While Joe Rogan enjoys visiting and performing at comedy clubs during his free time, he does appreciate the steady work schedule of series television. In addition to being able to remain in one city, he notes that "working on a series allows me a different kind of creativity, and it's a chance to work with a very talented group of people."
